One of Det. Alex Cross's hated enemies is Kyle Craig who has escaped from prison and is seeking revenge. Craig kills FBI agent Max Siegel and undergoes plastic surgery to make him look like Siegel, then learns everything he can about him.
In Washington, D.C. Cross has proposed to Brianna Stone and is called to investigate the sniper killing of two of Washington's politicians who are under investigation for corruption.
When another sniper killing takes place and this person is also under investigation for criminal activity, the killers are praised for being patriotic and officials realize they have another case like the Beltway Sniper.
Kyle, posing as Siegel, is assigned to the case and moves his plan for revenge into high gear. Cross is unsuspecting and this adds excellent suspense to the story.
The story is a page turner but the reader must accept that a person can assume another person's identity so well that even the person's co-workers don't suspect anything.
Even with this skepticism, James Patterson shows that he's the master of nail biters because he still gets the reader's involvement in the case. We wonder how Cross will be able to stop the snipers and if he will be able to stop Craig before Craig can take revenge against Cross and his family.
3 1/2 stars moving up to 4 for the excellent suspense.
