A Great Conclusion

After eleven successful volumes, the Death Note series comes to a bittersweet close. Megalomaniac Light Yagami and L's successor, Near, go head-to-head in a final battle of wits. Surrounding them are other key players in the series, including the shinigami (or "death god") Ryuk, who is responsible for the notebook having been placed on earth.

Spoiler alert...

As it turns out, the one responsible is the wild card who determines the fate of those present in the end of the volume. I half-expected things to end this way, so I wound up feeling a sense of satisfaction in knowing that at least one character got his/her comeuppance. However, it comes at a cost with human lives being the price. There are several unexpected fates that certain characters meet, which is why the conclusion to Death Note is, as already stated, bittersweet.

What I love most about this series is that it gets readers to contemplate justice versus personal agendas, (the lack of) humanity's power over fate, and many other things. Even though some of the characters are detestable (as they should well be considered), they have merit in their rounded developments and diverse personalities.

The art, of course, is magnificent. The attention to detail is stunning, and everything fits the mood of the storyline.

Overall, I highly recommend this series. The final volume is amazing.

Completely bored with his everyday life. Straight A high school student Light Yagumi is about to experience excitement he has never dreamed of. After class, Light comes upon a black book lying on the ground titled Death Note. The user instructions describe if a persons name is written in the book, then that person would die from a heart attack in a certain amount of time.      After testing the book on an armed man during a hostage situation. Light learns that the book is far …

For lots of people series ended when "L" died. I am not one of them. Yes, Near and Mello are not L, but the last plans by both Light and L's students provided a pretty interesting plot.

Death Note (デスノート, Desu Nōto?) is a Japanese manga series created by writer Tsugumi Ohba and manga artist Takeshi Obata. The series centers on Light Yagami, a university student who discovers a supernatural notebook, the "Death Note", dropped on Earth by a shinigami (death god) named Ryuk. The Death Note grants its user the ability to kill anyone whose face they have seen, by writing the victim's name in the notebook. The story follows Light's attempt to create and rule a world cleansed of evil using the notebook, and the complex conflict between him, his opponents and a mysterious detective known to the world only as L.

Death Note was first serialized in 108 chapters by Shueisha in the Japanese manga magazine Weekly Shōnen Jump from December 2003 to May 2006. The series was also published in tankōbon format in Japan starting in May 2004 and ending in October 2006 with a total of twelve volumes. The series was adapted into live-action films released in Japan on June 17, 2006, on November 3, 2006, and on February 2, 2008. The anime series aired in Japan from October 3, 2006, to June 26, 2007. Composed of 37 episodes, the anime was developed by Madhouse and directed by Tetsuro Araki. A light novel based on the series, written by Nisio Isin, was released in Japan.
