This is definitely a fairy tale for adults, and the theme may be distressing for people who had childhood trauma. That said, it is a well-written tale and I could not put it down until I had finished it; and have read it several times since.
The story takes place in a fairy tale kingdom in a fairy tale time. The well rounded characters grow and change over time; and are depicted with strengths and flaws.
The book deals with childhood emotional and sexual abuse. While this is a very small part of the story, it casts a shadow over the lives of all the characters; the main character struggles, almost fails, but finally becomes much stronger for what has happened to her.
All of Robin McKinley's books are well worth reading, but this particular book is her best. I highly recommend it.
