Bruno Torenzi kills attorney Vincent Marcozza in one of New York's finest steakhouses. Then he shoots his way out of the restaurant.

At a nearby table, reporter Nick Daniels was about to interview fallen New York Yankee player, Dwayne Robinson. Robinson was going to come clean about his use of drugs.

When Nick returns home and plays the tape from the interview he's surprised to hear the voice of the killer say, "I have a message from Eddie, Justice is blind."

Nick knows how important the tape is and takes it to the Manhattan District Attorney, David Soren, who is also the fiance of Nick's former girlfriend.

Things happen rapidly in this story. Bruno Torenzi is celebrating with a high priced prostitute when her two Russian brothers push their way into the room and attempt to rob Torenzi. The Russians think they have another nervous John but Torenzi picks up his own gun and the matter is solved.

The pacing is well done as we follow the actions of Nick as one Italian mobster after another take him for a ride and he narrowly escapes.

James Patterson has written a fast moving story but the characters are stereotypical and the book jacket states that this will be a contest of Italian Mafia against the Russian Mafia. The Russian Mafia makes so little impact to the story that it is almost meaningless.

To use a very appropriate metaphor, James Patterson's work is very "hit and miss" for me. Sounds like this one is a hit. Good job on the review, Mike.

This is the third novel that James Patterson wrote with Howard Roughan. The first two were Honeymoon and Sail. This one has a good plot and lots of action, but some readers might be turned off by some wise cracks that the hero makes.     Nick Daniels, a magazine reporter, is the novel's hero. We are introduced to him when he makes a speedy retreat from Sudan and a hail of bullets by natives who dislike American interference, whether medical care or reporting. We …

About this book

Wiki

The good

New York's Lombardo's Steak House is famous for three reasons--the menu, the clientele, and now, the gruesome murder of an infamous mob lawyer. Effortlessly, the assassin slips through the police's fingers, and his absence sparks a blaze of accusations about who ordered the hit.

The bad

Seated at a nearby table, reporter Nick Daniels is conducting a once-in-a-lifetime interview with a legendary baseball bad-boy. In the chaos, he accidentally captures a key piece of evidence that lands him in the middle of an all-out war between Italian and Russian mafia forces. NYPD captains, district attorneys, mayoral candidates, media kingpins, and one shockingly beautiful magazine editor are all pushing their own agendas--on both sides of the law.

And the dead

Back off--or die--is the clear message Nick receives as he investigates for a story of his own.Heedless, and perhaps in love with his beautiful editor, Nick endures humiliation, threats, violence, and worse in a thriller that overturns every expectation and finishes with the kind of flourish only James Patterson knows.
