A teenager named Neil Miller is left alone after a strange virus has prematurely aged most of the Earth's populous and killing them of old age. Neil has been wandering around aimlessly looking for survivors and supplies. Whenever he finds a survivor, they just die before his eyes. Neil is not a stranger to death. He was orphaned awhile back when his family was killed in a car crash. Before the apocalypse, Neil was living with his grandparents and watched them die from the plague that was being called The Calcutta Virus. Despite the UK government's plan to isolate the country from outsiders, the virus somehow got through. Neil has found signs of a survivor but they're not too keen on being found. Who are they and why don;'t they want to be discovered?
Another creepy post-Apocalypse novel from Samuel Youd. The themes explored in this book are isolation, the collapse of society, lawlessness and the government's inability to control a viral contagion. You'll feel for Neil as he starts to slowly lose his mind being alone for so long and watching people around him die or go insane. Using the pen name of John Christopher, he has wrote several fascinating books on the post apocalypse (The Ragged Edge, No Blade of Grass) that are must reads but they are very hard to find because they have fallen out of print. Check out your local library to find a copy of this interesting novel. If you're a big fan of the post apocalypse genre then this is a must read.
