Cons: Somewhat simplistic plot and not that much adventure
The Bottom Line: Overall a well-written book to introduce the Beast Quest series and enough adventure to make readers look forward to reading about Tom freeing the other 5 beasts.
This book is the first book in the first series of Beast Quest. The book moslty introduces the characters and the Beast Quest. It only has a little bit of adventure near the end with Tom facing the first of six beasts he must free in his Beast Quest.
The book begins with Tom being in his hometown where fires are causing trouble and the river has almost entirely dried up. He is sent to the king (King Hugo) to ask for help. He soon discovers that the whole kingdom of Avantia is facing trouble of various kinds and he must sneak in to get the attention of the king.
When the king discovers Tom is the son of a well-known knight, who has been missing since Tom was yonug, the king and a wizard named Aduro ask Tom to take on the Beast Quest and save the kingdom. They give him a horse named Storm, a sword, and a shield. The first task is for him to free Ferno the Fire Dragon.
On his way to face the dragon he meets Elenna and her wolf named Spirit. Together they continue the quest.
Overall the book is well-written. The part of freeing the fire dragon is a somewhat limited adventure, but it is nice that the book sets up the series very well and understandably it does not leave much room for a big challenge to free the dragon unless it made the book possibly unmanageable for its target age group (I would say medium experienced chapter book readers). The background does enough to hook into the series and there is just enough adventure to think there will be more in the coming books that do not have to deal with the whole background aspect.
