An interesting concept, although not for everyone

  • Jan 14, 2009
In the last several years there has been quite a bit of talk about the Raw Food diet. It by no means is a new idea, but had recently become popular through celebrities and TV. In getting Fresh: The Ultimate Live-Food Cookbook I hoped to learn more about the history of raw food eating and to also find some new recipes to incorporate healthier foods into my familys meal time.

The first chapter gives background and concepts behind raw food eating. Touching on things like the 5 Basic Flavors: Sweet, Salty, Bitter, Sour and Spicy; including a list of common items used for each. It also goes over recommended appliances used for preparation. Several of the suggested brands are found here on Amazon: Vita-Mix 1700 Turbo Blend 4500 Countertop Blender with 2+ HP Motor, Cuisinart DFP-14BCN 14-Cup Food Processor, Brushed Stainless Steel, Excalibur 2900 9 Tray Dehydrator and Joyce Chen Saladacco Spiral Slicer, White just to name a few.

The next five chapters are the recipes. You have Savory Dishes, Drinks, Desserts, Marinated & Fermented Foods and Travel Foods/Wild Edibles. It has a small section containing pictures, twenty-four pages total. They vary between completed recipes, techniques and some identification of wild edibles. The are beautiful pictures, just one look at Coconut Cream Pie and Cashew-Orange Thumbprints had me checking out the recipes.

After reading this book, I can believe that there are definite health benefits to incorporating more Raw Food into ones diet. I myself could never give up meat and cooked foods, but I do appreciate the Boutenkos choice for their family and I will look forward to introducing some of it to mine.

If you believe that raw foods are better for your health and want more variety than the typical cookbook offers you, this could be a very important book for your shelf.     There are savory dishes, sweets, drinks, marinated and pickled foods, and a special section on wild edibles. Attractive photographs show how to prepare dragonfruit and durian as well as more familiar fruits like mango and pomegranete, and also how to identify some edible wild foods.    I …

This is a difficult book to rate. There are aspects which are very good but others that are quite weak.    Pros:    The first 53 pages are full of background, great commentary and information. Unfortunately much of the discussion of the health benefits of eating fresh foods is "preaching to the choir" as I imagine most people that buy this book are already aware of just how important eating good healthy food is.    The few photos in the …
