Did you ever start reading a book, and almost from the beginning knew that you weren't going to like it? That's what happened to me when I began this novel. To me, the plot just didn't work on so many levels that I had a hard time following it, or even staying awake at times. I'm a fairly forgiving reviewer, but this one just couldn't cut it, in my estimation. I won't even begin to annoy you with the "plot" of this work. This book may be enjoyed very much by a lot of folks, but one of those folks won't be me!
My wife kept looking at the cover of this book and asking me *what* was I reading... :) Glamour Job: A Fairy-Tale for Grown-ups by Doug Farrell is a quirky, off-beat story that quickly grabbed my attention and became an enjoyable way to unwind for three or four days. I don't think I've read something quite like this before... Laurie Morgan is a model in Chicago, and her life is at a bit of a standstill. She's divorcing her husband and trying to find a more exciting life for … more
As the title suggests, this is a fairy tale. It contains goblins, half-breeds between goblins and humans and humans that are goblins disguised by being covered in artificial skin that makes them look like humans. "Doug Farrell has penned a sly social commentary on the complexities of personal identity. There are lurid and even unsettling moments, but Farrell's experience as an improv comedian keeps things moving with a smile." --Fantasy 100
"Highly Recommended. This book is something out of the ordinary, and it is written in a humorous way that will appeal to a wide audience." --Midwest Book Review
"Farrell's debut is first-rate, a clever combination of the paranormal, urban fantasy and social commentary. The shallow but lovable heroine tells her tale from a prison cell in a snappy irreverent voice. A delightfully quirky cast of goblins, gnomes, faeries and half-breeds cuts the fashion industry to shreds. There are unresolved conflicts, but you'll have to buy book two for the answers. Rating: 4 Stars HOT." --Romantic Times
"Rating: 5 Stars. GLAMOUR JOB is a fun, fast-paced, and very enjoyable story. It has many twists and turns, and since it is for adults, there are sex and violence, but in a light tone. I do not ever remember reading anything quite like this. The mixture of ghosts and goblins with sci-fi make this plausible and it holds well together. I highly recommend this book to any sci-fi and fantasy readers." --BookReporter
