"Where have all the flowers gone." Song lyrics

  • Apr 29, 2012
In this powerful novel that shows the disintegration of a marriage, the story begins with Nick Dunne and his wife, Amy, in their days as newlyweds in Brooklyn, New York.

They seem relatively happy and are characters that the reader can relate to. However, their jobs are lost in the economic downturn when magazines begin eliminating positions.

Nick gets a call from his twin sister, Margo, who is back in Missouri caring for their ill parents. With no other logical steps that he could take, he decides to come home to Missouri, help Margo and open a bar.  Amy isn't in favor of this but goes along.

In alternating chapters we read from Amy's diary as we see her become frustrated with the marriage and wanting more for herself. Then she sees Nick in a certain action that determines the second half of the book.

Amy disappears on their fifth anniversary and Nick's story is found to have more holes in it. In these alternating chapters, he begins to see what Amy is up to but trying to convince other people is very difficult.

The author does an excellent job of creating suspense as we see what happens to this marriage and to Amy and Nick.
