I was already excited when I first picked up Guilty Pleasures, Book 1 in the Anita Blake Vampire Slayer/Necromancer Series by Laurell K. Hamilton. I am a die-hard Buffy the Vampire Slayer fan. Joss Whedon's clever word play and intricate plots have always kept me interested, but the world of Anita Blake opened up a whole new fascination for me with the supernatural. Not only are there feminist undertones throughout the book, which I appreciate because I feel like there needs to be more empowered women, but Anita is not just a goody two shoes hero. At times her feelings and emotions can be raw and uncensored. And by uncensored, I really do mean uncensored. There is something sexy already about vampires and werewolves, maybe due to the secretive and unselfconscious lives they live, but Hamilton really introduces a fantastical world of sex, mystery, romance, horror, action all into one book. The writing is definitely not the most polished, but the world of Anita Blake is dark and gritty and raw, and super-fine writing would take away from the overall character of the book. I have to say that once I picked up this first book in the Anita Blake series, I couldn't put them down until I had read every last one.
