Horses are good, but not quite as good as dogs and more expensive

Despite generally being a little wary of any animal larger than myself I rather like the horses.

The main advantage of these larger mammals are that you can actually get on them.

I have always had dogs, and once had a cat. But I wouldn't rule out the possibility of having a horse one day - Maybe if I had more money (they are expensive and there are some ongoing costs), lived in the countryside and had some land.

Yes, then I would probably have a horse. A grey one. Called Matthew.

Writer, rancher, horseman, and conservationist Thomas McGuane is the author of nine novels, a collection of short stories, several collections of essays on sport and horse, and he also wrote the screen play for "Missouri Breaks."    The latter just goes to show that an author can be an expert on his subject and still end up as a grease mark on the Hollywood Wall of Shame.    I had already read his essay collection, "Some Horses" and eagerly ordered this second …
