"We did come from the land of ice and snow." Song lyrics

  • Oct 30, 2010
Maura Isles, Boston medical examiner, attends a conference in Wyoming. While there, she meets an old friend from medical school and agrees to join his companions for a brief ski trip.

In the heavy snow, they make a wrong turn and become stranded on a deserted road. Seeking shelter, they trudge through the snow to a group of homes but find them empty and appear as if they have been recently deserted.

One of Maura's companions becomes seriously injured and another tries to ski back to civilization for help. When this person doesn't return, Maura decides that she will ski for help, herself.

Maura's friend, Daniel Brophy, a priest that Maura had been seeing, becomes concerned when she's not on her return flight. When she doesn't answer her phone, he asks Maura's friend, Boston homicide detective Jane Rizzoli, for help. Jane and her husband, an FBI agent, make some calls and decide to go to Wyoming to find Maura.

The suspense mounts as the local police don't seem very forthcoming. Then there is a report of finding two bodies that were burned beyond recognition. Could one of these bodies be Maura's?

The author provides excellent pacing in the novel. As law enforcement personnel approach the suspected mastermind of the incidents on the mountain, it is as if Tess Gerritsen was a composer and the reader was listening to the sounds of music, such as the "1812 Overture," as the action reached a climax.

At this point there was an unexpected plot twist that succeeded in taking me by surprise. This was well done but in this section, the author had one major character having actions attributed to that person that were out of character with prior descriptions and difficult to accept.

The author dealt with a number of sensitive issues such as religious cults and the manner in which women can be regulated to lower status in cults. Gerritsen also provided information about the children of families in cults and how sometimes, they can be neglected.

Overall, a fun read and interesting progression of the Rizzoli and Isles tradition.

Miserable in her going-nowhere love affair with Catholic priest Daniel Brophy, Boston pathologist Maura Isles gives in to an adventurous impulse, which she regrets even before it all goes very bad.    This latest in Gerritsen's Rizzoli (Jane Rizzoli, Boston detective) and Isles series opens with a prologue in which cult leader Jeremiah Goode takes an unwilling nubile girl as his latest bride. So when Maura finds herself stranded in an eerie deserted village in Wyoming where each …

Despite the fact that ICE COLD is the 8th entry in the now mature Jane Rizzoli and Maura Isles series, Gerritsen has continued to keep her plotting fresh and exciting and allows her two protagonists to continue changing and evolving, presenting themselves as interesting, exciting and realistic, human characters that their fans will care about.      Medical examiner Maura Isles is unhappy. She has self-diagnosed her personality and her love life as staid, hidebound and unexciting, …

A topical snowbound medical thriller that sheds light onto the all too common real-life examples of cult brainwashing, religious programming, far right wing anti-government militarism, mass suicide and the courage it takes to effect an escape from such a group and undergo the extensive de-programming that is necessary to resume a normal life. A fast-paced, easy reading enjoyable thriller.

For me, reading anything by this author is always a bit of a hit/miss situation. Although, in most cases, the author is great at creating plotlines that have kept me engaged and, more importantly, guessing until the end, the reality is that, in my opinion, at times, the writing can get a little "Harlequin". Having said that, I actually do enjoy alot of books that are published by Harlequin, but NOT thrillers. For me, thrillers should be gritty and tough, for the most part and it is obvious that …

I always enjoy this series and these characters, and Ice Cold is no exception. Medical examiner Maura Isles takes a much needed breather from her relationship with Daniel Brophy, who is struggling over the choice to remain a priest or commit to Maura. She's off to Wyoming for a conference, and whom should she meet but a friend from med school. Maura decides to accompany him on an impulsive cross country ski trip, but things go terribly wrong, and she's soon fighting for her life against …

About this book

Unpredictable twists help propel Gerritsen's winning eighth novel featuring Boston medical examiner Maura Isles and homicide detective Jane Rizzoli (after The Keepsake). While in Wyoming late one fall for a pathologists' conference, Maura agrees to join an old college acquaintance, his 13-year-old daughter, and two friends of his on a last-minute ski trip. When an accident stalls their SUV on a remote mountain road, the fivesome take refuge in an abandoned village, Kingdom Come, the home of a religious sect led by a charismatic prophet, Jeremiah Goode. But what drove the residents from their 12 identical houses, leaving food on the table and pets behind? When the local police find what they believe to be Maura's charred body and those of her four companions, Jane; her FBI agent husband, Gabriel Dean; and Fr. Daniel Brophy travel to Wyoming to conduct their own investigation. Gerritsen supplies plenty of depth in both plot and characters. TNT launches a new TV series based on this series in July.
