A historical look at how cooking and food has evolved in the British Isles from ancient times

This book is a historical recapitulation of the basics of how food has been cooked in England since the dawn of civilization. It starts with primitive humans using fire and steps through the development of cooking utensils and new foods up to the microwave oven. Using sketched images of people at work in preparing and eating food, you can see how the mechanics of food preparation has changed. Two interesting facts are that "Lord" is a contraction of "loaf-ward" or the keeper of the loaf of bread and "Lady" is a contraction of "loaf-kneader" or the maker of the loaf. Other facts like that are interspersed throughout the book, making it an interesting text on how food in British society has changed over the years.
