A very useful resource and good value for the money

Packed with a fairly impressive breadth of video tutorials, this single disc runs the gamut from covering beginner skills to tackling features specific to the latest version of Photoshop CS5. The tutorials are arranged in an orderly way. There are a set of 10 main topics, ranging from "getting started" steps, to more advanced editing techniques, to printing a color-managed finished product.

I especially liked how the dvd's index shows you a blurb describing the content of each tutorial. Most include the duration time so you can plan your time investment. Additionally, each of the 10 sections ends with a "test yourself" feature so you can challenge your mastery of freshly viewed lessons. My only suggestion (minor issue) is that a search function would make finding a particular video concerning a particular topic a bit faster.

The videos are clear and understandable. I'm impressed by the closed-caption feature, which runs a transcript of the speaker's presentation along the bottom of the screen. I've never encountered it before, so I thought that was pretty cool (you can turn it off if you find it distracting). All the usual conveniences of video are available, such as pause, alter screen size, volume control, etc. Very easy to navigate. The package advertises portability for the videos as well (use on iPods and other mobile devices) but I have not tried that out.

I particularly like the features that allow you to bookmark important areas of a video, and a "watch-and-work" mode, which reduces the screen size and places it at the top corner of your monitor. You can have it play while you try out techniques with Photoshop. Nice!

The guide book that comes with the DVD is somewhat undersized, but that's to be expected - I guess as the DVD tutorials are supposed to be the stars of the show. It does contain some decent tips though. One thing I noticed that was lacking in the guide book is better integration with the video. If would be useful if the book had explicitly mentioned which video(s) to consult if you wanted more information. The guide book and video section titles do not match, so making quick connections between the two can be difficult.

A bonus is that this product counts as approved courseware should you want to go for your Adobe Associate certification.

I've been very impressed with the videos I've viewed so far. All in all, I think this is undoubtedly a very useful resource for the beginner, but perhaps a bit less so for an advanced Photoshop user - I know a lot of the initial videos on the disc were old news to me. Still, I think it is a good value: for over 21 hours of video it's about 2 bucks a tutorial (at Amazon's current price), and I guarantee you won't be disappointed by the quality and clarity of the instructions.
