I read this story after reading The Secret Garden as a child and wanted to share this great work with my own daughter. My daughter is 3.5 yrs old and last year we started reading chapter books. What better books to start with. We started with The Secret Garden and then read A Little Princess. My daughter immediately became enthralled with the book and was always asking to read "Sarah". This lovely, classic story about a little girl sent to boarding school immediately starts to let you know what a special girl she is. She is very imaginative and likable. She also is very kind. Unfortunately she sees in the book how not everyone is the same way, how sometimes people's opinions or kindness to you can be based on material things. Not wanting to give away too much of the story it is basically about a little girl who goes from having everything to having nothing and working for meager food and shelter. A very strong girl who's imagination never dwindles, though, and helps her through the tough times. She then is able to go back to her previous lifestyle, having, however, seen the true person inside many around her. It is a very heart touching story.
