"There is no limit to the power of love." John Morton

  • Apr 29, 2011
Boston homicide det. D.D. Warren is called by State Police liaison Bobby Dodge when a homicide is connected to a member of the State Police.

St. Trooper Tessa Leoni is found beaten and bruised in her kitchen. Her husband, Brian, is dead, shot three times with her service revolver. In addition, her six-year-old daughter, Sophie, is missing.

It seems as if Tessa's a victim of spouse abuse and she shot her husband in self defense.

In alternating chapters, we follow the investigation headed by D.D. Warren and Bobby Dodge. They learn of Brian's gambling addiction and a possible history of spouse abuse. They also question if he did something to Sophie.

Tessa had risen above problems in her younger life and since she became pregnant with Sophie, has led an exemplary life.

As D.D. investigates, the search continues for Sophie and D.D. learns that she is pregnant. She promises this new being that she will bring the child up in a better world.

Brian's autopsy reveals something and Tessa is arrested for murder. Again, we see Tessa's point of view and feel that something is developing.

Readers of Lisa Gardner will know that there is more to the story than originally appears. As much as any thriller writer today, Gardner knows how to write a compelling story. When the reader begins to assume they know how the story is developing, things change.

D.D. Warren is one of the excellent characters and learning that she is pregnant at a time when she is looking for a missing child and questioning what that child's mother might do to protect her child add a wonderful element to this story. I enjoyed every minute of this story as my fingers shook with anticipation of what suspense awaited me at eh turn of the page.

About this book

One question, a split-second decision, and Brian Darby lies dead on the kitchen floor. His wife, state police trooper Tessa Leoni, claims to have shot him in self-defense, and bears the bruises to back up her tale. For veteran detective D. D. Warren it should be an open-and-shut case. But where is their six-year-old daughter?
As the homicide investigation ratchets into a frantic statewide search for a missing child, D. D. Warren must partner with former lover Bobby Dodge to break through the blue wall of police brotherhood, seeking to understand the inner workings of a trooper’s mind while also unearthing family secrets. Would a trained police officer truly shoot her own husband? And would a mother harm her own child?
. . . TO SAVE HER?
For Tessa Leoni, the worst has not yet happened. She is walking a tightrope, with nowhere to turn, no one to trust, as the clock ticks down to a terrifying deadline. She has one goal in sight, and she will use every ounce of her training, every trick at her disposal, to do what must be done. No sacrifice is too great, no action unthinkable. A mother knows who she loves. And all others will be made to pay.
