Christianity Plus Nothing Else - Theology 101

If you have ever wondered about whether or not God exists or if you already are a Christian and wanted to learn more theology, then this book is a good place to start.

I first picked up this book when I was a student back in college. I found out that this was actually a collection of transcripts from a radio show aired in England in the early years of the ‘40s. The transcripts are grouped into 3 parts entitled “The Case for Christianity,” “Christian Behaviour” and “Beyond Personality” respectively.

Unlike other theology books, Lewis shies away from using philosophical/theological jargon so that the reader may easily understand the “basics” of Christianity. He goes to argue for the existence of God by using the “moral argument” – that is, the proof for God’s existence is the reality of man’s sense of morality (which lies within him and is given him by the Lawgiver).

From the existence of a Divine Being he goes on to prove that the Christian God is the real God compared to those of other religions. Later he goes to prove that Jesus Christ is the answer to man’s sin problem.

The writing is simple in style and easy to follow. Lewis transitions from one argument to another almost seamlessly. As I read page after page, I can’t help but feel like a little boy starting to understand how electricity works. I often found myself agreeing to his points, saying to myself: “But of course, what he wrote makes sense.” The illustrations he used to convey his points really helped illuminate what he was talking about.

This is a superb masterpiece. I highly recommend this to anyone who would like to be “enlightened” about the Christian faith regardless of whether he is a believer or not.

Thanks for the review. Also one of my favorite books ever. The way Lewis articulates what he believes in such a logical and real way is amazing. I agree with you that he does not get sidetracked with denominational slants or non-essentials. He breaks down the Christian faith and the opposition clearly and effectively. It's one of those works, that you have to read and read and read again.
