Moon Called is an excellent first novel in the Mercy Thompson series. Patricia Briggs introduces Mercy who is a walker, meaning that she can turn into a coyote. She lives in a world where vampires, werewolves and fey are real, and she gets stuck right in the middle of it.
Mercy is a car mechanic and lives next door to the werewolf pack’s alpha, Adam. She also lives with her past lover, Sam, who is also a wolf, and the son of the Marok, the head of all wolf packs. Raised by wolves and surrounded by them every day, it is difficult to attempt a normal life.
Yet she also has other non human friends, like the powerful fey she works for at the car shop, and the vampire Stefan who’s gotten her in and out of trouble before. These connections with different groups of powerful beings complicates her life and brings her into many dangerous situations that she has to find her way out of.
Moon Called and the rest of the Mercy Thompson novels are all great reads for both men and women. I have recommended them to my friends and even my mom, and they all loved them. Mercy is a strong kick ass heroine who knows how to take care of herself, but still manages to find herself in sticky situations, both of the dangerous and love kinds. Definitely give it a try if you’re into the vampire and werewolf craze. They are quick easy reads with lots of twists and turns and will definitely keep you on the edge of your seat.
