A predictably comforting "beach" read, "Moon Shell Beach" brings to the reader all the ordinary elements of such a tale--friendship, betrayals, redemption--with the satisfying culmination in romance.
Lexi Laney and Clare Hart grew up on Nantucket Island, fast friends who revel in their beach adventures --specifically those involving a unique island haunt, a hidden cove they have named "Moon Shell Beach." When their bond is frayed by serious disagreements, Lexi leaves the island with her new husband, wealthy Ed Hardin. Clare remains behind, engulfed in island life, and opens her own "Sweet Hart" chocolate shop.
When Lexi returns many years later, divorced and bereft of any money or comforts (due to a prenuptial agreement), she opens a boutique--right next door to Clare's. She specializes in distinctive items, many of them expensive, and has named her shop "Moon Shell Beach." More resentment arises, as Clare feels that Lexi's name for the shop is another betrayal.  She has co-opted something that belonged to both of them.
The author brings the story to a satisfying, yet predictable conclusion, with the women forging a new bond and also finding new romance.
Thayer's style is easy to delve into, and except for the predictability of the events, it is a satisfying read. One that deserves four stars.

About this book

Childhood friends Clare Hart and Lexi Laney work toward reconciliation in this bland novel by The Hot Flash Club author. Lexi wants to leave stifling Nantucket, so when wealthy Ed Hardin proposes marriage, Lexi seizes the chance to live a life of off-island luxury. But after 10 years in a lonely and adulterous marriage, Lexi divorces Ed and lands back on the island seeking to repair the relationships she left behind. As Lexi and Clare take steps toward salvaging their friendship, their relationships with men—particularly Lexi's feelings for Clare's fiancé—test their loyalty. Unfortunately, Thayer's characters are as thin as a worn beach towel, and the phoned-in prose does little to make up for the contrived plot twists that dominate the final act.  From PW.
