Jodi Picoult has been the best seller of 16 novels including My Sisters Keeper. The fact that this book is another one of her best sellers doesn’t come to any surprise to me after having read it. It was a fantastic book that tugs at every one of your heart strings as it moves from character to character. Maybe I’m a sucker for love, but the parts that I looked forward to most in the book were the ones that dealt with Campbell and Julia. I absolutely loved how Jodi Picoult had the main story with Anna and her family and within it all the drama and pain. Then she led the reader into some relief by adding something happy. Campbell and Julia had their problems, but as the story chugs along, so does their love interest.
I don’t think that Picoult could have written the book without putting each character as the narrator. In this way she drew the reader in so that we understood where each one of the characters came from. As the reader, I understood Jesse’s pain and why he felt the need to burn down buildings, when as an onlooker, all I would see is a disturbed child. I understood the love that Anna held for Kate, but the need to finally say goodbye. Most importantly, I understood the need for Sara to save Kate. While her actions could seem cruel to Anna, and neglecting towards Jesse, I knew that it was what Sara needed to do. Nobody ever wants to feel the grief that comes with the loss of a child. “Grief is a curious thing, when it happens unexpectedly. It is a Band-Aid being ripped away, taking the top layer off a family. And the underbelly of a household is never pretty,” Jodi Picoult.
