An excllent drama by a bestselling author

Michael Palmer, a physician, is the author of seventeen fascinating best selling medical thrillers. He and Robin Cook are the leaders in the field of medical thrillers, books that revolve around unusual situations involving medical practitioners and the institutions they work for. The books are filled with drama, suspense, and interesting characters. Even people who are squeamish about blood or who dislike reading about medical procedures will enjoy Palmer's books because their primary focus is on the strange, sometimes bizarre, always interesting, criminal acts of the medical practitioners. This mystery novel has all of these qualities.

Palmer describes two seemingly separate plots. The first focuses on the irrational bursts of anger by several people, including a physician who shoots more than a half dozen innocent people and commits suicide. The doctor had been an alcoholic. Another physician, Lou Welcome, had been monitoring his alcoholism and helping him. Welcome had assured everyone that the murderer's problems were resolved. He is blamed for not evaluating the doctor correctly. He notices other irrational bursts of anger by people in the city. He decides to find out what is happening.

At the same time, the First Lady is having problems with her husband, the president of the United States. He isn't doing what she wants him to do. The Secretary of Agriculture, a friend of hers, has been charged with a sexual crime, but claims he is innocent. The president encourages him to resign. She wants the president to help the Secretary. She receives a note saying that the note-writer knows that the Secretary is innocent and will help her prove it if she does certain things. She mentions this to her husband who becomes angry and tells her not to mention the subject again.

Readers will enjoy seeing how the two plots develop and how they are resolved. While enjoying the dramas, they will get a new appreciation for the importance of the Department of Agriculture and the workings of the Executive Branch.

I met Michael Palmer at the New England Crime Bake last year. He was an excellent speaker.
