The Bottom Line: read it if you have time but not a must read or first read
Most books are based on a lot of opinion, parenting books especially. A book can be taken too word for word or literally. Or you can take what you can use from it and discard the rest. For the most part I am for gentle parenting. I have also heard all the hype about this book. Do I personally, as a gentle parent, endorse this whole book? No! But if you take only what you can use and discard the rest it can be a helpful tool.
This book is written as a guide to parenting your child from birth to 4 months old. It covers feeding, schedules, sleep, and crying. I find that it is quite true, having a schedule helps a baby all the way around. They sleep better when they have a schedule and that helps the whole day. But this schedule has to be flexible if your child is hungry before the allotted time then they need to eat. You have to remember to try and rule out other things before going straight to the feeding though. A babys cry is a babys language, but Im hungry is not the only thing they say. A baby also changes frequently so that schedule may need to change as they grow and change. But if they have some sort of schedule you know where to start looking when they are cranky or you know about how many times they will eat while you are out. The information on schedule and routine was helpful in this book. I did not like the information about a baby being left to cry while awake or when going to sleep. Ignoring someone, baby or adult, is never right.
I found the book a bit short. It didnt go into a lot of depth about too much. It also didnt cover too many exceptions such as growth spurts, shots, or illness. It seemed to imply that there was a way to have the perfect baby which there is not. The information on scheduling though I did use to help me build my daughters rough schedule.
I dont know that I would recommend it as a good first read to new parents. There are many better books out there. But it is short enough to read when you have the time and you will take something from it.
