On the Grind, the eighth installment in the Shane Scully crime thriller series by Stephen J. Cannell is packed with suspense, intrigue and plenty of action from cover to cover.  Cannell is an Emmy-Award winning writer and the creator of over 40 television series including The Rockford Files, 21 Jump Street, The A-Team, Silk Stalkings, Hardcastle and McCormick, Hunter, The Greatest American Hero and The Commish.  The Shane Scully Crime Series began in 2001 and has produced such novels as The Tin Collectors, Hollywood Tough, White Sister and Three Shirt Deal among many others.

Shane Scully, an LAPD detective who has always been on the right side of the law, finds his life falling apart as he is charged with felony misconduct in a high-profile murder case.  Rather than face criminal prosecution and further jeopardize his and the department's reputation, Scully makes one of the most difficult decisions of his life as he resigns from his long standing job with the Los Angeles Police Department.  Scully's wife, Alexa, Chief of the LAPD detectives wants a divorce, colleagues who have always admired him feel betrayed, and Scully's son Chooch, mortified by his father's behavior has stopped speaking to him.

In an effort to continue in the work he loves, Scully puruses employment with the Haven Park Police Department near downtown Los Angeles well-known for hiring cops rejected by other departments, and for its corruption all the way down to the mayor's office.  Can this tough as nails cop put up with the emotional and physical abuse that it takes to redeem himself with his family and co-workers?  It's a twisted plot that only gets more intriguing as you read on.

On the Grind is a spectacular read that takes you on a roller coaster ride of cops, killers, crooked politicians, gang violence and illegal immigrants that depicts the violence and corruption in the Los Angeles area.  Cannell is an exemplary storyteller who keeps the reader glued to the page through descriptive language, short sentences, high drama and nonstop action, leaving the reader wanting for more.

Don't expect to put it down after a couple of chapters, as once you get into this spine chiller you'll want to read it from start to finish.  I was hooked from Chapter one, kept on going through chapter 33 and couldn't stop reading until the last dragon was slain!  If you're a fan of Shane Scully you'll love On the Grind, and if you're new to the series fasten your seat belts as you're in for a rocky ride!

Great review Donna! I rarely read novels but you make this one sound so intriguing. Sounds like lots of twists and turns in this one.

On The Grind by Stephen J. Cannell
Bang! Right off the bat, Shane is caught and charged with felony case-tampering and blackmail on an investigation into arms dealing by Harry Venture of Venture Studios in Hollywood. While Shane was investigating Venture, the FBI was investigating him also, and Shane's caught on video tape "swapping spit" all over town with Harry's starlet wife, Tiffany Roberts. Shane is forced to resign and give up his pension, but even worse Alexa kicks him out of the house for cheating on her.     With …

About this book

On the heels of  Three Shirt Deal, a New York Times bestseller, comes an electrifying new thriller from Stephen J. Cannell in which Lt. Shane Scully is accused of evidence tampering and his wife, Alexa, discovers Shane's been having an affair with a beautiful movie star.

Charged with felony misconduct in a high-profile solicitation of murder case, Lieutenant Scully is faced with an impossible decision: either quietly resign from his job as a detective for the LAPD, the work he loves, or face criminal prosecution. Rather than smear the department's reputation and his own, Scully chooses to leave. His colleagues of years feel betrayed to learn that a dirty cop has been in their midst. His wife, Alexa, the chief of detectives, leaves him, seeking a divorce for his dalliance with the accused in the case, a beautiful, well-known Hollywood actress. His son, Chooch, horrified by these events, won't even speak to him. Life as Scully knows it is over. Or so it seems . . .

In order to make a living the only way he knows how, Shane seeks employment from a police department that has been known to hire rejects from other departments: the Haven Park PD. Haven Park is an incorporated city near downtown Los Angeles, just one square mile in size and populated almost entirely by Mexican immigrants, most of them illegal. The department is a hotbed of corruption, in effect the personal goon squad and collection agency of the town's mayor, Cecil ...
