I read this book as someone who does not yet have children, but does plan on starting a family in the next few years. I decided forewarned is forearmed. Therefore, I dove in. I found some of the information informative and other bits less so. I should also say that I am a professional chef, so I collect and hoard cookbooks, but I can be overly critical at times.
I loved the information as to what to feed your baby and when. I thought that I was great. Starting off with X here and Y here are good guidelines. The recipes are even broken up according to age, starting with 4-6 months, and ending with 12-18 month olds. There is even a recipe for a first birthday cake! Therefore, a mother can look in the section for a child of her age and previous sections. Many of the dishes are only a few ingredients and there are directions for freezing and thawing the food, so a new mother can whip dishes up when she has help, and feed them out when she is busy.
The bad news is that some of the recipes seem almost two simple. Mango Banana Puree is mangos and bananas and water. Hummm. I suppose that some new moms just want to know what to combine, so if you are a beginner in the kitchen, this is perfect. If you have a ton of experience it might make you insane. Also, there is recipes for meat, eggs, and dairy. I am a vegan, and I do not believe these are healthy options for children. I will be omitting them from my own children's diets, and I encourage other mothers to at least look into some of the existing research before making their own decisions.
Overall, it would make a good shower present or a good addition for a mother who wants to break away from the jarred baby food.
