The Lightning Thief

  • Jun 10, 2010
The Lightning Thief by Rick Riordan
Spoilers inside.

The Lightning Thief is the first book in the Percy Jackson and the Olympians series. It was recently turned into a film. The series is geared towards children and young adults, but it is an interesting read.

I was coerced into giving the series a try by my younger brother. Believe me, I was skeptical at first. I'm not big on mythology to begin with, so I wasn't too excited.

Percy Jackson is a half blood child of the god Poseidon. His mother is mortal, and his father is, well, Poseidon! This makes for a very interesting childhood. Until his early teens, Percy is unaware that his father is a god. All he knows is that weird things have happened to him his whole life, and these events tend to get him kicked of school.

Riordan has created an intricate and entertaining world of greek gods and nuances of mythology tucked into a pop culture universe. I find the gods to be trite characters and the other main characters, including Percy, to be utterly obnoxious. But the storyline itself, as well as some of the side characters, to be enjoyable. I read each of the books in the series, including the Lightning Thief, in a day. They are extremely fast paced and easy to read. However, if you attempt to put the book down and come back to it later, you're going to have to go back and reread a few pages to get back into it. I'm not sure that's such a good idea for a children's book, but hey, it's not my novel!

Overall, I'm glad I gave the book a chance. It was worth reading , but not something I love.

I've always loved Greek mythology so when I found this book quite by accident I thought this was one of the best books I had ever read.  I even had to bargain with a kid in the YA section so that I could take out the next book in the series before him.       The premise of the book is that Percy Jackson is the son of Poseidon, god of the waters.  Of course he doesn't know this and just assumes that he basically has no dad.  Then the weird things start …

I have so much love for this series. I saw the movie in the theaters and was inspired to read the books after following the movie intently. I read all of the series in a few days and loved every minute of it.   To summarize the book is about a young boy who learns that he is a demigod, and son of the god Posidon. He goes on a magical quest to retrieve an item stolen from Zeus in an attempt to prevent a war on Mount Olympus.   I fully recommend this book to everyone.

I would recommend this book to other readers. If you like Mythology, this is a good book, since it is based off of Greek Mythology. It is located in New York, and Olympus is in the Empire State Building. Percy Jackson finds out that he is a son of Poseidon, and goes to camp Half-Blood. Camp Half-Blood is a camp for demigods, or sons/daughters of a god and a mortal human. In camp Half-Blood, one of the only ways out is to go on a quest. Percy Jackson and his friends, Annabeth …
