Jane Whitefield makes her living helping people disappear.

In this story, James Shelby  was framed for his wife's murder and now the people who framed him, want him dead. He's in prison and called to give information on another case. While awaiting being called to the court house, Jane stages his escape.

However, she's caught by the people who want Shelby dead. When she resists them, they shoot her in the leg and take her to a secluded place where they want to torture her so she'll tell them how to find Shelby.

Jane reaches back and uses her Seneca heritage for the strength to withstand the punishment but at a terrible cost. In attempting to escape from these people Jane is told that other people who Jane are upset by rescuing their intended victims.  They want to take their revenge on her so there will be an auction to see which villain will have Jane to torture.

The author has a wonderful talent for bringing to light the situations that some unfortunate people stumble into. He makes us feel sympathetic for these people and appreciate that they have Jane to turn to for help.

Compared to many protagonists today, Jane is unique for bringing her empathetic nature and wanting to save these people while still being a vulnerable person, herself.

The pacing is fast and filled with excellent adventure as Jane does her best to save herself and the people she's helping. She also shows how like many people she is when she wants to get home to her husband and discusses the possible start of a family.
