Educational; but not Inspirational

I recently read INVENTIONS and thought it was an exceptional educational tool. RAIN FORESTS, part of the same Insiders series, is not near the caliber of educational material that INVENTIONS was.

One thing that RAIN FORESTS excels in is providing factual information, with no hidden agenda other than providing factual information. The destruction of the rain forests is mentioned, but is not preachy and overly done. I believe this approach bring more credibility to the book, and gives the reader the opportunity to experience the wonders in the rain forest and have the ethical conversation within himself or herself.

The content of RAIN FORESTS is great. It is very educational and has a lot of great fundamental material about rain forests, but the delivery is less than stellar. For starters, I cannot comprehend why they publishers used computer generated images for the entire book. Rain forests are one of the last remaining beauties of the natural world, and the computer graphics do nothing short of insult this beauty. For the most part, the graphics do not look anything like the lifelike pictures anyone could find doing a Google search. The trees and foliage bend at awkward angles and detract from the lifelike appearance.

The only other complaint I have about this book is the fact that sometimes it appears that the reader must have some previous education of minute rain forest geography. There are times when a particular river is mentioned with no context of where along the tropics it is located. Toward the end of the book there are some basic maps and supplementary geography; but it did not help when certain areas were referenced out of context.

Overall, there is some wonderful material about rain forests in this book, and it is presented in such a way that children should enjoy learning from this text; but, there could have been a better way to bring the book more to life and make it more inspirational.

Good reading,
