I love the book Room. It is about a young boy named Jack and his mother. They live as prisoners in a shed called the Room. This is a fictional novel, but Emma Donoghue makes me feel for these characters like they were real people. Emma Donoghue is the kind of writer that does not reveal too much too soon, and I like that. She creates the setting of life in the room. The plot of the novel is not explained in the first chapter, but Donoghue gives the reader enough information to keep readers hooked.
She gives a gender to every object in the room. A rug and a plant are referred as feminine objects with the pronoun of she. A lamp and a watch are referred to with pronoun of he. Emma Donoghue gives each object a spirit and vitality in the novel by doing this. I found this aspect of her writing to be enjoyable.
The lives of Jack and his mother are transformed in the novel. This book is very exciting to read. This is because Emma Donoghue makes readers care about her characters so much. They both go through individual trials in the book. The bond between mother and son is strong in this book. I love how Jack's mother is able to educate her son with the limited resources available to her. These characters possess qualities that I admire in people. I admire the resilence and intelligence of Jack's mother and the courage of five year old Jack. They are strong willed fictional characters in a very moving novel. I love the novel Room.
