Given the tremendous breadth and depth of what you can do in C#, no single book can possibly do anything more than present an introduction or cover a small set of capabilities in significant depth. As is the case with all of the books in the "Teach Yourself" series, the goal with this book is to provide a quick and effective overview and in that context, the book is a tremendous success. The first part is a quick introduction to the IDE of the Microsoft Visual C# 2005 Express Edition, which is included with the book. While there is enough information to get the reader started, like all such environments, some familiarity with other such environments is a significant advantage. Once this is covered, the reader is taken through the basics of variables, data types, the standard control constructs as expressed in C# and the controls that all programmers will be using. Very little code appears on the pages, most of the points are made via screenshots of the consequences of the code. This is a bit of a weakness, as there are times when nothing can describe code better than the code. However, since all of the code examples are on the CD, it is a weakness that can be overcome with only a minimum of effort. If you have a desire or need to learn the basics of C# quickly, then there is no book better than this. It is of necessity superficial, but to the extent that it teaches, it is very well done.
