An intrusive narrative surrounding the life of a young girl that feels alone because of her past and what has become of her life. It feels as though you are experiencing her life step by step, along with her. Excellent character development and a realistic psychological progression. The intensity of the author's ideas are vividly expressed.

I am emotionally attached to this book. It sends the reader through a range of emotions. The main character is a small girl when the book begins and the reader learns to understand her world and begins to relate with her problems. It is easy for a female reader to understand and sympathize with the main character as she goes through a life very similar to many young girls even in this day and age.  As Doloris ages and faces a life of obesity, the reader begins to feel her …

I have read this book several times, and I am amazed each time I read it. Wally Lamb captures the life of a woman from childhood to adulthood in such an insightful and heartbreaking way. In some way shape or form the reader is able to connect to his main character, Dorothy. She lives a hard life, and is faced with problems I think we all encounter at some time or other, whether it be bullying, seperation of our parents, or self esteem issues.
