My favorite new author is Gail Carriger. Her first book, released 10/2009 was I admit an impulse purchase. "Soulless" (The Parasol Protectorate series) with it's Victorian Gothic cover grabbed my eye as I walked by a display of new paperbacks. I read the back blurb, and I read a random page and made a mental note of the author with the idea to purchase it another time. After another 10 minutes in the store I was so intrigued by the cover and the little bits I had read I went back and grabbed it!! I can't even tell you what else I purchased that trip-- the only thing that stands out is that book! Since then Gail Carriger and her books have been the only thing I've been recommending to family, friends, and even strangers!! I've even bought copies as gifts!

So what's this story about? Vampires and Werewolfs? Nothing *new* you say? ...You have no idea! It's the freshest and most original book series I've read in a long time!! It's set in a Victorian England that knows about and employs vampires and werewolves.... and people without souls?! It's still the same time period with the outrageous dresses, and hats, tea times, Steampunk inventions, and traditional Victorian thoughts but with Carriger's witty writing and sassy main character: Alexia Tarabotti- you'll laugh out loud and crave more! It's a fantastic mix of mystery, romance, history and comedy! My suggestion to readers looking for something exciting and new: pick up Soulless; curl up on the sofa with a cup of tea and travel back in time!! (I would also pick up the second book-- Changeless... you will thank me for it!)

A little bit Victorian gothic, a little bit of steampunk. What's not to love! Alexis and quick tongue are a sure fire hit. I love this author.
