The New York Giants and New England Patriots both surprised me. Not only in their performance last night at Super Bowl XLVI, but their overall performance coming into the post season. Neither of these teams looked the way they did in the regular season. Granted, the Giants weren't playing at full strength for much of the year and they came off some very tough losses, with a notable sweep by the Washington Redskins, but the point is, they didn't look anything like potential champions. Same for the Patriots despite their 13-3 record, with such a porous defense that a primitive quarterback like Tim Tebow was able to light them up badly in their regular season meeting. On their way into the post-season, I believed both teams were on their way towards being ousted. Needless to say, they proved me wrong entering completely at the ready, and outside the Giants dismantling of Atlanta, and the Patriots obliteration of the Broncos, they narrowly made it to the grandest stage.

The Super Bowl is an event that features the two very best teams of their respected conferences, and last night, I believe that's exactly what the fans were given, the absolute best. Both of these teams came to win, and they played pretty much flawless during the first half. As suspected, this was going to be a close game as the first half ended with a 10-9 Patriots lead. Both QB's played very well, and both offensive and defensive lines played very well. But as some had predicted, it came down to who would make the worse mistakes and who would capitalize off of them the best. The Giants would later close in 17-15, and it was an amazing 38 yard catch from Eli Manning to Mario Manningham, with little time remaining that changed the momentum of the game. The Patriots knew how crucial that play was as they would predictably challenge it. From here, although it still felt as if it was anyone's game, it became apparent that the Giants were going to win.

As everyone knows, the Giants did go on to win 21-17, but this was a game that even in defeat, the Patriots can still hold their heads up high. They didn't fold, they never gave up, they didn't get blown out, and it was indeed a nail biter until the final seconds counted down. These guys can indeed say they played their best because these two teams were equals. They squeaked out points and they did great jobs controlling the clock. Personally, I think this was their grittiest performance all season.

The crowd was heavily into this game as well. They were every bit a part of this game as the players. I enjoyed the chants for Manning, and my favorite was for Victor Cruuuuuuuuuuuz! It was just electric.

The game was splendid, and the half time show would have been fantastic if not for M.I.A. attempting to steal the show for herself with an obscene finger gesture that has indeed worked in her favor, because it has everyone talking and I'm sure that's exactly what she was after. Well, she won't be getting my attention after this. I never bought any of her albums before, and I sure as hell won't be buying them now or later. On a positive note, the show was entertaining and even at the age of 53, I think Madonna delivered a nice performance. I heard some of the "relic" comments, and even some other unnecessary things from folks who appear to be much older than she is. I have great hearing and I did not hear her knees cracking. Perhaps those folks heard their own brittle bones breaking.

Overall, Super Bowl XLVI was indeed a great game that went down the wire. It was very competitive and suspenseful. The Giants once again proved that best records and home field advantage mean very little as they overcame the odds again. Looking forward to next season.

Pros:
-Fantastic game

Cons:
-Childish antics during half time show

I am a little mad at myself because I missed the first half. The second half was pretty suspenseful as any game could get.

I shut off the phone, no one was screwing this game up for me.

So glad NY came out on top man, would have liked a Texas or Maryland  team in the bowl and winning but at least the Patriots lost. Sounds harsh but I can't stand them.

LOL. I hear you man. A lot of people don't like them.

Great take on the game! Frankly, I think the entire Giants' receiving corps should have been the MVPs. It's funny to look back now: I reviewed the New York Giants as part of my teams series some months ago, and they had just come off a losing streak. I wrote that at the time, I didn't believe they had a shot at the Super Bowl, although I made some clout by pointing out their 2007 season and concluded that given what happened that year, Eli and company would definitely have a say on that matter. Well, not only did he have a say, he had the last damn word!

Thanks. Don't feel regretful. That's my team and even I thought it was over for them with some of those losses. I mean the losses to the Redskins and even that one against the Eagles was hard to explain.

Frankie, excellent take on the game. I am thinking that the Giants were able to twice recover their own fumbles and Manningham made up for his first catch that he went out of bounds. So the Giants were more mistake free. The Patriots had the inopportune 12 men on the field penalty, the grounding penalty, and Welker missing a ball that he catches in his sleep most days. Then the Giants had that one interception where their linebacker decides to cover Gronkowski (kind of like Derek Jeter being out of place to take the relay throw that nailed Jeremy Giambi at home plate). Even with all that, the hail Mary pass at the end came close to giving the Patriots the game.

Thank you very much.

Exactly, it came down to who was going to make the bigger goofs. The Giants were able to police themselves, and most of all, even after those early two sacks, Eli still kept his head in the game and I think that has a lot to do with his playoff experience; a younger QB would have gave in to the pressure.

The mistakes killed the Patriots though. But still, this was just some gritty football, and I enjoyed the fact there were no questionable calls. At least not from where I saw it. Also, you seen my two list I made awhile back; the most disappointing and most impressive NFL teams?

Who would have thought that this game was virtually a carbon copy of the last three meetings of these two teams? Three times in a row Eli Manning led the Giants downfield for a comeback lead with two minutes left and three times in a row Tom Brady tried to stage a last second drive that went to the bitter end. Three nail bitters that came down to amazing catches and a couple of "almosts" and "dropped" passes by sure handed Patriot receivers. Three times in a row the Giants have ended an amazing …

Quarterback Eli Manning Earns The MVP Award For Sure
The Giants did it again. They beat the Patriots for the second time in recent history   with this 2012 Superbowl win.  Eli Manning  won  the MVP predictably.  The award   was well earned after spectacular performances tonight and during the playoff season.   Eli played better tonight. He took more risks by throwing the ball for longer passes   and more completions. Mario Manningham #88 made a spectacular game changing   catch …

Great game from beginning to end. I knew this was going to be a close game and it definitely was, but as good as this game was, it's not as great as the Giants miracle run. New York Giants - Super Bowl Champs. Yeah!

What can I say. This is a rematch from 2008. In that time the two teams have met 3 times and all games were back and forth events going down to the wire. I expect no less from this game.

I definitely didn't see this coming, because I thought both teams were getting bumped and they some how managed to slip by their toughest competition. I'm really looking forward to this rematch and I hope the Giants pull off another miracle run. Go Giants!

This game was a real nail-biter, even if it was a little bit sloppy at times. I don't know how there were calls on each team for too many men on the field. I think too many people are talking about Mario Manningham's big catch - yeah, it was awesome, but big catches like that happen virtually weekly in the NFL. Tom Brady lost, but he did play a very good game.
Quick Tip by . February 06, 2012
I don't know what it was, but this Super Bowl was just dull to me. Glancing at the score, one would believe that the game was a nail biter, but the only suspenseful moment for me was the toss up Brady chunked to end the game. I'm glad that the Giants won, but I preferred the previous Super Bowl contest between these two to this one.
