Flawless writing and a fresh, new voice!

  • Sep 4, 1999
Forced into marriage by a scheming matriarch, widow Alice Roye weds a survivor of the Great War, Alsatian vintner Siegfried Roddernwiller, lookalike cousin of Alice's husband who died fighting for the Allies. Both have secrets that, if told, could destroy the uneasy alliance. Alice needs Siegfried's winemaking expertise to restore her Sonoma winery to its former greatness, and Siegfried desires Montclair almost as much as he desires his intriguing new wife. It is the early days of Prohibition, and together they struggle to save the winery by obtaining a coveted sacramental wine license as they struggle to come to terms with their personal desires.

Sweeter than Wine is fresh and innovative. A dramatically different setting in a time period considered "unimportant" by mainstream publishers. Kudos to Neighborhood Press for allowing readers to taste this premier vintage, and kudos to Michaela August for providing a superb novel for my keeper collection. Read Sweeter than Wine and it will find a place in your keeper collection, too. Brava Ms. August! More, please!

About this book

Sweeter Than Wineis what small presses can offer at their best. This is a wonderful story that no mainstream publisher would probably touch, because it's set in the wrong time period. Kudos to Neighborhood Press for bringing it into print...

This is a solid and stylish first effort by the writing team of Karin Welss and Marian Gibbons, writing as Michaela August. The characterizations are finely-drawn and sympathetic, especially Siegfried, left utterly alone at the end of a war he never believed in and didn't wish to fight. His longing for Alice is palpable; and readers are in for a lovely surprise when they finally come together. Not every European male is a playboy.

Alice is likeable and intelligent; she's struggled hard to hang on, and she is smart enough to know when she needs help. Her panic at the thought of her past being exposed is understandable given the time frame, as is her reluctance to trust Siegfried with the only thing she values her land. Sweeter Than Wine is a champagne-sweet debut, and will enchant fans of historical romance who like something a bit unusual. -- Cathy Sova, The Romance Reader, March 1999

Desert Island Keeper Review: This is a marvelous story of life and love in the wine country of California... Everything I look for in a keeper is here: well-drawn characters who act in a believable fashion, a beautifully evoked sense of time and place, smooth writing, humor that adds to the story but never overwhelms it, terrific dialogue, and a plot that ...
