Well-drawn business and computer landscapes in this second installement

  • Dec 12, 2011

A serial novel is an interesting concept, and Sadie Hayes The Start-Up picks an ideal topic for ebook serial fiction, with genius programmer Amelia Dorey persuaded by her more worldly twin brother Adam to turn programs into dollars.

The Anti-Social Network is the second episode in the series, a novella with enough length and depth to provide enjoyable reading. The author does a good job of creating and following a single story arc within the longer tale, and Amelia and Adam’s lives cross one more major hurdle, nicely introduced at the start, as they head for the next.

A wise guide has provided location and facilities for the start-up, but other guides of uncertain loyalties bring in the world of high finance and deceit, while old friends and new provide problems and hope.

Some of the technical aspects seemed somewhat implausible to me, but the feel of software’s ebb and flow, the gap between friendship and sounding board, and the allure of the secure are very nicely drawn. I enjoyed the first and second parts of this tale and am looking forward to part three.

Disclosure: I received a free ecopy of part 1 and bought part 2 for myself, sufficiently intrigued to wonder where the story would go.
