Cotton Malone wants to learn more about how his father died. He knows that his father was the captain of an experimental sub that went down in Antarctica with all aboard.
Cotton pulls some favors and gets the records of the sub.
However, he has competition, one powerful man wants to keep the info from the sub a secret and will do whatever it takes to do so - even murder.
In a quick succession of events, with numerous deaths, Cotton ends up working with twin sisters whose father was also on the sub. These middle-aged, attractive sisters are competing with each other to see who can get the info on the sub first. Their iron fisted mother has promised the family wealth to the sister who gets the info first.
It's hard to know who to trust and people are killed left and right in this exciting story.
There is a puzzle that must be solved and ancient history comes into play - the history of Charlemagne. In trying to solve this puzzle there is good suspense and action.
The reader looking for an exciting read and a trip through history will enjoy this novel.
I think that this book may be the best that Mr. Berry has written to date. Even though the plot is rather incredible (but who cares, it's fiction after all!) it certainly speeds along quite quickly and on parallel tracks. In one paragraph you're following Cotton Malone, in another a nasty Navy admiral with high ambitions, and in another Cotton's former boss and an aide to the President.
