Robert Dugoni deals with sensitive subjects of rebellious teenagers, parental relationships and the hold that drugs can have on a young person's life.

After a succession of court appearances, attorney David Sloane doesn't know what to do to keep his step-son Jake out of jail.

His friend, detective Tom Molia, suggests David and Jake join him and his son, T.J. on a men only camping and fishing trip. David thinks this would be a good way to reach out to Jake and accepts.

The first night, while their fathers are asleep, Jake and T.J. break into a grocery store and are caught. Before their fathers even know about it, they are given a quick trial the next morning and sent to the Fresh Start Youth Training Facility.

The town is owned by Victor Dillon and there seems to be nothing the fathers can do. The judge is like a character from the old west who controls the town. The police department is hired locally and is no help.
The training program might be a good idea but the more they find out about it, the more it worries them.

With suspense mounting and the reader sympathizing with David's plight about what to do, we wonder what the fathers can do against an entire town.

Sloane is the kind of parent many of us wish to be. He wants to protect his step-son but how will he succeed?

Dugoni is a professional story teller and this smoothly written mystery is a joy to read.
