This is the by far the best novelization of the comics that I have read. It is far superior to the original story that appeared in the DC comics. It also reads as a good novel that any science fiction lover would enjoy. Based on a series of Superman comics, the author rewrote the story into a novelized form. The author did such a great job that you couldn't tell that it was created from individual comics. Superman fought the one "unstoppable" foe that required all his physical powers and wit to defeat ending in Superman's death. With him gone others tried to take up the mantle and though they had limited success, were never able to successfully fill his boots. Like Arthur Conan Doyle did with Sherlock Holmes, the author had to find a plausible way to bring Superman back. This is pulled off quite well. I remember reading this book during a 12 hour layover in the Chicago airport and not noticing the time passing, since I was so rapt by this tale.
