Good First Half, Then Loses It!

This was an extremely interesting scientific thriller for the first two hundred pages or so. Kathleen Sainsbury's parents were archeologists in Iraq excavating an ancient temple during the late 1970's. They are set upon by Saddam's forces and killed. In the present time Kathleen is working on a project to isolate the feature in DNA that can extend human life. She is mysteriously contacted by a Dr. Sargon who is desperate to talk to her.

Sargon had been a friend to their parents and explains to Kathleen their story. He gives her a mysterious "gift," something he found in the ruins they were working on. He tells her to come back the next day to let her know something important. She does but when she arrives at his apartment he has committed suicide. Kathleen later learns that the "gift" that Sargon gave her may hold the key to helping her finish her scientific quest. After that bad guys are scrambling after her and a lot of bad things happen.

The story seemed to go downhill from there, with bumbling bad guys and just about every guy Kathleen meets seems to use her for something. I don't want to tell too much because it will give away the plot. I was able to give the book three stars because it does have an intriguing beginning and some good biblical references and moral questions. The big one is, if people could live longer it might pose more threats to civilization than good.

Sounds interesting. Too bad it starts to go downhill after such an intriguing beginning.

“THE GENESIS KEY is a solid blend of science, myth, history, and suspense. It’s remarkable and unconventional, which together make for a great tale. There’s an intense brand of storytelling here, utilizing all of the elements I love. I can’t wait for more from James Barney.” (Steve Berry,New York Timesbestselling author ofThe Jefferson KeyandThe Templar Legacy)

“A strong debut thriller. . . . James Barney deftly explores elements of modern science and antiquity to mine the kinds of themes so ably explored by the likes of Dan Brown and James Rollins. . . . Barney is a welcome player in a crowded field.” (John Hart,New York Timesbestselling author ofThe King of Lies, Down River, The Last Child, andIron Horse)
