"You set yourself on fire, you're still not as hot as me." Song lyrics

  • Oct 2, 2012
In 1914 newspaper war correspondent Christopher Marlowe Cobb "Kit" goes to Mexico to report on that country's civil war.

President Huerta took over the presidency in questionable means and Poncho Villa, who was a bandit, raised an army to oppose Huerta. Villa has the support of many common people and Kit wants to write a story about him.

This is an exciting time in Mexico and Kit runs into various people of note including journalist and novelist Richard Harding Davis.

Kit is waiting to travel to the countryside for a chance to interview Villa. While waiting Kit falls in love with a lovely Mexican laundress - who has a secret  she's not telling him about. One night he spots a German official sneaking into the town, coming from a German munitions ship in the harbor. Kit thinks the man is up to no good and follows him.

Kit is a swashbuckling person who thinks nothing of grabbing a gun to fight his way out of a difficult situation. When he is traveling to see Villa, Villa's men are attacked by another group and Kit takes part in the defense of Villa's army.

This story is written in a literary manner with good descriptions of the country and with keen dialogue.
It was informative to have the short history about the Mexican civil war and the conclusion of the story is highly satisfactory.
