I stumbled across this mystery in a store and it seemed up my alley--and it was! The first in Olson's tattoo shop mystery series, it centers around Las Vegas tattoo artist and shop owner Brett Kavanaugh, who gets embroiled in a mystery when a woman comes to see her about a devotion tattoo, but the name she wants on her isn't the name of her famous fiancé. Soon she's collaborating with a rival tattoo artist, being seduced by a possible suspect, and stumbling over dead bodies.
Tattooing is at the heart of the book, both in terms of Brett's livelihood and the murder victims, and Olson plays this up splendidly, with Brett's insider knowledge helpful in puzzling out the psychology of the crime as well as some of the logistics. There's a lot going on here but it doesn't read as overdone, just fast-paced. This is a mystery to race through that will leave you guessing while also giving insights into the world of tattooing as Brett works on clients and tries to unravel the mystery (without too much help from her brother Tim, a cop). Olson filled The Missing Ink with enough shady characters to keep me guessing, torn between wanting to get to the end and find out the killer and keep on reading. Thankfully, there are more books in the series on the way to sink my...needle, or rather, eyes, into.
