Raw diet nutritionist to the stars Natalia Rose's guide to the raw food world was easy to read and actually inviting for all levels of wannabe healthy eaters. While it seems that most raw or vegan books are pretty unforgiving if you slip off the wagon, Rose's guide includes a helpful 1-5 scale of raw food commitment, based on your current lifestyle, age, health and eating habits. Level 1-3 seem very easy to adopt for generally healthy eaters, who stay away from beef and chicken anyway and refined sugars and flours. The recipes are also very easy to prepare, without all those weird expensive tools (like a hydrator, juice compressor, Vita-mix) other raw food recipes recommend. I'm a fan of the Green Lemonade (a staple in Rose's book) and the Gold Elixir dressing. I admit I'm more of an armchair raw foodist, but if I were to go totally hardcore, Rose's book would be my roadmap.
While this book is mainly focused on losing weight, I wish it would focus more on how to maintain weight or even way to gain weight on this diet. I'm helping family members transition to more raw foods for health reasons, so it would be more helpful if there was a section on putting on healthy pounds for people recovering from illnesses.

I'm so glad! i wrote the review before I gained holiday weight, so perhaps now I will be turning to The Raw Food Detox for uh, weight reasons. you know, body mass redistribution and all. Hehe.

You totally sold me on this book. I'm enjoying the holiday feasting now but come 2009, my goal is to develop more healthy eating habits and this book is a great guide to the raw food world...although I have to agree that health, rather than weight loss, should be the primary incentive.

I was totally looking for a book about raw food diets. I had found a couple but they all seemed so unforgiving. Thanks for the heads up! I'll definitely have to look into this.

hey hey healthyrache, thanks! yeah, the whole loss angle is sort of annoying when I read these kinds of books, but I suppose it's a golden catchphrase when they are marketing their book. I was only lead to this book when I started reading about how raw foods have alleviated and sometimes cured many chronic diseases, like diabetes, allergies, to cancer, such as Gerson Therapy (raw food type treatment that has been known to cure advanced cancer). i'll review those other books next!

This sounds like a great way to get people to ease into the diet and not feel forced to go completely raw right away. I do agree with you though, I think most diet books are way too focused on weight-loss. There are so many other reasons to pursue a healthy diet that warrant attention (high cholesterol, diabetes, cancer, food allergies, etc.). It would be interesting to find out if there has been any research on this diet's effectiveness for people suffering with longterm illnesses. Anyway, great review ... I think I'll give this one a try!

I confess - I haven't read it.  While I can understand a raw food diet in the abundant summer months, what do you eat in the winter? Raw sqaush?

From Natalia Rose's website, "The first book from top Manhattan Nutritionist, Natalia Rose. Natalia provides her simple, proven five-level diet plan to safely make the transition to eating raw foods, and to detoxify and achieve a perfect body no matter how you eat now.

The raw food craze has taken off, as raw restaurants spring up and celebrities, models, and other fans tout the effects of eating raw. However, many people who are intrigued by raw food simply don't know how to make the transition from what they're eating now, or how to achieve the benefits of eating raw without giving up their lifestyle or the foods they love. Natalia Rose, an in-demand nutritionist, shows how in The Raw Food Detox Diet. Whether your diet is primarily made up of meat and potatoes, or tofu and tempeh, you can incorporate the flavour and lasting health benefits of raw food into your life.

Over time, our bodies build up poisons and store waste from food that is not fully eliminated. Raw food helps to detoxify the body by flushing out these poisons and setting us back on a course toward greater energy, clearer skin and shinier hair, and a slim, natural figure. But making the transition to a raw diet too quickly can have negative effects on the body. Instead, the healthier way is to make a gentle change based on your previous diet and current needs. You do not conform to The Raw Food Detox Diet; it conforms to you, and you choose how far you want to go. Whether you're looking to live an all-raw ...
