Pros: easy to follow program, excellent results, easy to read

As a personal trainer for the United States military, I have seen so many different dieting concepts over the years. The biggest problem with the large majority of these diets is that they are only capable of short term results, because they don't take into consideration the different hormones and chemicals currently in the body, and the ones that are needed for different processes in the body, including those required for metabolism.
Some of the biggest flawed diets that I have seen include the ones that are focused on high protein levels, low carbohydrates, and the so called 'starvation diets'. These diets are just unrealistic and result in a major loss in muscle mass, which results in a quick weight reduction, but increases weight gain over time as the body loses it's capability to burn calories on it's own. These diets almost always reduce the bodies natural metabolism over time, and result in drastic negative implications over the long haul.
One of the best books I have found and has held true even as more and more research has been done on it is The Zone diet, created by Barry Sears, who is a well known biochemist.
The Diet The diet is based around the concept that the body has chemicals that are required to maintain different body processes. By messing with these chemical requirements, we are altering the body in a way that we just can't predict, because we have yet to do enough research on these chemicals and the lack of them. So rather than playing with the many different items that we do know the body needs, Mr. Sears decided to figure out which foods within those food groups were going to have the biggest impact on metabolism and how the body operates. So rather than eliminating known items that the body needs for operation, he decided to work around the concept that some foods produce more favorable results than others, while fulfilling the needs of the body at the same time.
Mr. Sears did many years worth of research studying our ancestors, trying to figure out what people ate traditionally before all of the availability of modern day foods. What he found was that we are eating for too many 'bad' carbohydrates and proteins that leave the body weighed down such as 'bread' based carbs, when in reality there are other ways to obtain those carbs, which will result in metabolic stimulation, while ensuring that insulin levels aren't increased in the process, which can be a major issue with all too many modern day people.
The end result of all of the research is a diet, based upon simple principles, that is easy to follow. Rather than eating foods that you hate, chomping down on salads all day long, the diet is more focused on maintaining the requirements of the food pyramid, but doing so in a responsible manner, that eliminates the foods that create the most harm to the body in terms of weight gain. Another focus of the book is on a class of hormones, eicosanoids, which are said to play a major factor in the enhancement of metabolism.
Effectiveness of the program As a personal trainer, I don't always tell people exactly what they have to do. I help them to develop a program that will work best for them based upon principles that I have been taught and from what I have experienced in the past. When I was first brought this book by someone that had to lose 14 pounds in a month, I was doubtful that it would be effective, because it really doesn't focus on weightloss as much as it does healthy, practical living. However, the end result is substantially different than the actual focus throughout the book.
My goal with this program was to try and establish a program for this individual that would not only use this method for healthy eating, but also meet military standards in terms of military physical training. So this program was included alongside a strict military training regimen, which required a quality diet in order to be effective in the short period of time that we had to take off this weight.
Basically by doing nothing more than swapping out foods, such as eliminating breads, rice, but including similar foods that included these carbohydrates that many diets suggest that you eliminate altogether, we were able to come up with a diet that seemed more like a prayer than anything. It didn't focus on eating less, it focused more on eating better foods.
Throughout the period of the month, I noticed that he went from having no energy to having a substantial amount of energy within a week of starting the diet. He was capable of running much longer, he had better focus, and told me that other issues such as his acid reflux, weren't flaring up anymore and he could without taking any medications for the problems. It seemed that he was a completely different guy. He went from being lazy and unwilling to do anything for himself, to having a ton of energy and begging to do something just to burn off some of the energy that he was producing in mega quantities. I was beginning to see how the diet could translate into something positive.
By changing the diet minimally and only including foods that don't weigh down the body, that are easy to digest, and produce natural energy, it was like he was taking energy drinks all day that had a much longer term effect. He went from being a traditionally difficult person to motivate into someone that became one of my best success stories.
The end result ending up in him losing 22 pounds over a period of 33 days. This was something that I would have never thought would have been possible from the beginning of the diet, and I was greatly impressed with the overall outcome. This of course was partly due to the increase in his workouts due to the excess energy, however, even without the workouts, I would assume that he would have been capable of losing 5-10 pounds just on the diet aspect alone. We worked out for one hour, five day sa week, so the diet would have had to have played a major part in his weight loss.
Writing Method The book is written in a style that is easy to understand and easy to follow. Rather than being boring and a slow read, the author fills the book with details only rather than filling it up with information that really isn't necessary. The book serves more as a 'how to' than anything, and proves to be relatively easy for someone to read through in a short period of time.
The book doesn't use a lot of words that are only going to be understood by the medical community, which helps in the comprehension of the material presented. The book is definitely written with the average consumer in mind, which makes it much easier for a large majority of the population to follow and be successful.
Final thoughts If you are looking for an easy to follow diet program, then it doesn't get much easier than this program. The ideas and concepts that are presented are logical, and if followed will result in a whole lot more energy, and a much greater dedication to completing the program. After seeing the results first hand, I just don't see how any other diet could be more effective.
The best thing about the diet is that there are no long term negative effects. Even if you were to stop doing the diet altogether once you reach your goals, as long as you don't go overeating, then you shouldn't put the weight back on quickly, resulting in a net gain, like many of the other diet programs that are available to the public.
It's just an easy to follow diet, with great results, and definitely something worth checking out. If nothing else, it is going to give you a lot of concepts that you can truly use throughout your life.
