"The greatest day of your life is when you take total responsibility for your actions." John Maxwell

In a timely novel with a number of major corporations going public to create wealth, "Total Return" discusses the corporate world of mergers and espionage.

Jeffrey Archer is a highly regarded employee of Triton Global where his wife, Sidney, is a legal counsel. He's secretly looking for another job and books a flight to California.

Before his plane leaves, Jeff meets someone at the airport and switches flights, heading toward Seattle.

The plane that he was originally to take, crashes, killing everyone aboard, including Arthur Lieberman, chairman of the Federal Reserve Board.

Triton is a high tech company in the final step of bidding for CyberCom, which will bring the company great wealth. However, another high-tech company, RTG, is also in the bidding. They want to learn what Triton is bidding so they can beat the offer.

The FBI is called in to investigate the crash and they determine that the plane crash was due to sabotage. When it is discovered that Jeff wasn't on the plane that crashed, he becomes a suspect and Sidney also comes under scrutiny.   It seems that most of the employees who work with Sidney have their eye on how much money they can make from the deal. Now she doesn't know who to trust.

Baldacci's clever writing is a pleasure to behold. The characters are well described and realistic with the result in a thoroughly entertaining novel.

This is one of those books that I simply didn't like but was compelled to continue reading to the end. It is one of those books where the heroine, Sidney Archer, tries to unravel a mystery even though she will probably end up dead. (in real life anyone that does what she does would have been dead about 50 times. She just seems to have "Indiana Jones" luck for getting out of dangerous situations). Any sane person in the same position would probably quit their search at the beginning. That is why …
