The changes in the characters from their original form are not positive

I read the comics where the Spider-Man character appeared for the first time when they first hit the newstands and have been a fan ever since. However, in this collection there are some major changes in the characters that in my opinion are negative:

1) Peter Parker is now an extremely skinny teenager, he seems on the verge of starvation.
2) Aunt May was a frail old woman but now she is a domineering woman with a bit of an attitude It was always sweet how she worried about Peter.
3) MJ knows that Peter Parker is Spider-Man and they are a couple with issues in their relationship due to the fact that Peter is Spider-Man.
4) J. Jonah Jameson used to be an extreme blowhard editor and now he is toned down to only a fraction of his pompous personality. This taming of Jameson softens the tone too much.

The story in this book is the origin of Dr. Octopus (Doc Oc) the best villain of the Spider-Man adventures. Spidey fights him and helps to go from a hero hounded to a hero tolerated if not celebrated. The inclusion of the battle between Spidey and Kraven is absurd and should have been left out. It is hard to celebrate a hunt conducted by simply following the news reports to the location of the news vans. However, the reference to the "super hero test ban treaty" was excellent.

As a long time fan of Spidey, those are some really random changes, and ones that I'm not ready for!

The Ultimate universe Spiderman is a "what if" kind of character and is separate from the regular Spiderman series. Marvel comics just announced the death of the Ultimate version of Spiderman, which comic comes out in Feb 2011.

Yeah, I hear ya. The Ultimate universe was a bit hard to get into. However most of the Hollywood films are based in the Ultimate worlds so there you go! Be sure to add your review to For the Love of Comics!

I read the first comic books containing the new character of Spider-Man when they first hit the newsstands and have been a fan of his ever sense. Written with a sense of humor and irony, yet devoted to his frail Aunt May, Spider-Man and his secret identity of Peter Parker were two conflicting characters that managed to mesh. Spider-Man the superhero was also made so much more interesting by the powerful villains that he was forced to fight. For a long time, the fan favorite villain was the powerful …
