Vampiric Heirachy proves entertaining!

Twilight is all well and good, but I have hit the jackpot on vampire fiction! Richelle Mead's Vampire Academy is one of the best vampire series going around right now, and you are missing out if you don't get a copy of it!

Rose and Lissa are best friends. And Vampires, let's not forget Vampires. Lissa is a Moroi vampire, a living vampire characterised by her tall stature, slim body and blonde hair. She is also royalty. The last Dragomir Princess, and a priceless commoditiy to the Moroi vampires.
Rose is a Damphir, half vampire and half human. Dhampirs are born to protect the Moroi, even if it costs the Dhampirs their lives.

and what exactly, do the Dhampirs protect the Moroi from? Strigoi of course. Strigoi are the undead vampires that crave the blood of the Moroi. They're deadly and difficult to kill, Dhampir guardians can never let their guard down, or they'll find themselves dead before they can say "St. Vladimir".

So what's different about LIssa and Rose? Lissa has the ability to wield the element of Spirit, which is rare among the Moroi, who usually only have the abililty to wield one of the other four. Spirit allows Lissa to heal, and hte first person she ever healed was Rose. Rose died in the car accident that killed the rest of LIssa's family, but Lissa's magic brought her back, and now Rose and Lissa share a special connection. Rose is Shadow-kissed.

But life at St. Vladimir's Academy for vampires is no picnic for Lissa and Rose. With threats to Lissa's life and Rose's rather complicated boy troubles, things are heating up!

Vampire Academy is brilliant! It beats Twilight in all areas, with great characterisation and continuous plotlines that Meyer was unable to accomplish. This is a must read for anyone who loves the Vampire genre. The complex relationships in Vampire Academy result in many an entertaining and thrilling story. As someone who has just begun book 4, I look forward to the future books in this Young Adult series.

For those who are not keen on reading a Young Adult series, Mead also has a brilliant series for adults, the Georgina Kincade series. They follow the adventures of a Succubus living in Seattle, and her reluctance to do what Succubi do best. This is also a great series. Book one is entitled Succubus Blues.

Vampire Academy so far consists of four books, entitled Vampire Academy, Frostbite, Shadow Kissed, and Blood Promise, with book five, Spirit Bound, due to be released some time next year.
