When one makes the decision to convert to the vegan lifestyle, apart from the jackass comments from friends and family, it now becomes a real challenge to eat healthy, and re-learn how to cook. Agave Nectar, Agar Flakes, Seitan, what is all this stuff?!
That's where Veganomicon comes in. It was one of the first cookbooks I got, for christmas of my first year of being Vegan.
This cookbook is amazing. Apart from having every cuisine style under the sun, it has intoduction chapters on how to cook grains, vegetables and beans, which is always a bonus for those of us who couldn't pick out Quinoa versus Millet in a health food store.
Like I mentioned earlier, the cuisine styles are extremely diverse. They've got spanish [Acorn Squash and black bean Empandas], Japanese [spicy tempeh nori rolls], Down-home american with a dozen casseroles and pot pies, I especially recommend the Cauliflower and Mushroom pot pie.
In addition, above every recipe is the lovely addition of "Icons" What I mean is above each recipe there are icons for soy-free, gluten-free, Low fat/reduced fat, recipes under 45 minutes and supermarket friendly.
Now, Veganism isn't all about eating healthy and finishing your broccili. The desserts in this cookbook are to die for! The Coconut 'Cream' Pie melts in your mouth, the Fudgy Wudgy Blueberry Brownies are every chocolate lover's fantasy. Not to mention the 'Ice Cream' recipes. Even the non-vegans will love these recipes!
