A young adult book that is for smart young adults and adults alike! This is not your mother's Judy Blume book! I was fortunate to come across this book when I was a Junior in High School and it was like my friends and I were being followed and someone was writing a story about our lives and some of the issues we were facing. Since then I have given copies of this book to many like minded friends who all identify with that time in their lives and specifically with different characters. Francesca Lia Block has created a fairy tale that deals with real life. Her writing style is imaginative and so descriptive you can read with all your senses! Set in Los Angeles, Ca. Francesca Lia Block, who was born in LA writes about the city in a language all her own... using phrases like "Slinkster Cool" and "Lanky Lizards", Block injects a youthful energy into the story that is only matched by the vivid imagery. The story and characters are real and memorable, touching readers with their thoughts, feelings, and very real life experiences. Some people criticise the book for it's appropriateness as a young adult book with it's very grown up issues like: Alternative lifestyles, Gay Characters, AIDS, Drinking, Drugs, and Abortion. I think young adults are dealing with a lot of things older generations either didn't have to deal with or didn't openly talk about... and Block's overall message of love, happiness and hope are only made truer by the tough challenges her characters have to face. Like all things when introducing to young, impressionable readers it's best to be involved-- read with them and talk and answer questions regarding the material they're absorbing. But I digress.

Blocks books are often quick reads 70-100+ pages each, but they are unforgettable because of the characters and more importantly Block's breathtaking descriptiveness and imagery. No matter what your age you will connect and be touched by the honest, true life issues dealt with in the book; all the while be amazed at the magic Block sprinkles throughout the book. It may seem silly to some but Block reminds us there is magic and love everywhere... we just have to open our eyes to see it!

I found a kindred spirit in Weetzie Bat. Any young adult who finds themselves lost and misunderstood will take comfort in this series.

About this book

Wiki

Weetzie Bat is a young adult novel written by author Francesca Lia Block. It was originally published in 1989. The first in her Dangerous Angels series. Set in a dreamy version of LA mixing 1980's punk and 1950's glam!

"Once upon a time in a land called Shangri-L.A., a bleach blonde punk pixie named Weetzie Bat lived a life of surf and slam.  But Shangri-L.A. can be Hell-A., too, and Weetzie wanted something celestial and sparkiling to keep her safe.  So she made three wishes and learned that love is the most beautiful and dangerous angel of all."
