Vegetarian or Not... A Great Pregnancy Book

  • Jul 20, 2010
This book is a great read for all expecting mothers - vegetarian, vegan, or meat-eaters.  In this book, Dr. Holly Roberts speaks about the health benefits of a vegetarian diet versus one that contains animal proteins.  She explains how to eat a well balanced vegetarian diet, making sure to include the neccessary nutrients for both mother and baby.  Even if you aren't wanting to completely cut meat out of your diet, this book is still very helpful in showing you how to get the necessary nutrients needed to have a healthy baby by eating right.

My favorite thing about this book is the month by month breakdown of your pregnancy.  In this section, topics are discussed such as fetal development, changes in the mother's body, common discomfots, and possible complications.  Each month also shows a simple illustration of the developing baby.  At the beginning of each monthly section is a well-written blurb on emotions and inspirations for the month.  I have found that this book is more well rounded than most other pregnancy books I have read.

This book also touches on the different types of birth / different birthing methods.  For new mothers, nursing is discussed.  The benefits of breastfeeding, positioning the baby, medications and herbs while nursing, and loosing the baby weight while nursing.

This book takes a very natural, healthy approach to pregnancy, which I love.  It is well written, making it easy for anyone to read and understand the information.

This sounds like the book for me when the time comes! I've been bordering on a vegetarian diet for a few years now, and I've been concerned about how it might affect a baby when/if I decide to have kids. Thanks so much for sharing such an insightful book!

About this book

Drawing on 25 years of experience as a vegetarian, mother and osteopathic obstetrician-gynecologist, Roberts strikes an inspirational tone in this handbook, offering practical and spiritual advice to women wondering about the safety of a vegetarian diet during pregnancy. There's nothing to worry about, writes Roberts, who offers nutritional guidance that will, for example, provide a vitamin B1 intake "superior to meat-eaters." She addresses everything from protein requirements to labor pains and nursing positions, with a zeal for the vegetarian diet that can seem almost religious. Roberts weaves spirituality throughout, with poems at the beginning of each chapter and numerous references to "maternal intuition" and "wisdom from a higher source." The volume's question-and-answer format grows a trifle tedious, although a detailed index makes specific information easier to find. Roberts dedicates her useful book to " every woman contemplating pregnancy while striving for the best of health and showing the greatest mercy to others," but readers who aren't already dedicated to vegetarianism and a spiritual approach to wellness may be put off by its sometimes preachy tone.
