Faith Mitchell finishes a mandatory computer training program by the Georgia Bureau of Investigations and is late, coming home. Her mother, Evelyn, is caring for Faith's four-month old daughter, Emma.
Faith has been through countless training exercises but when she notices a bloody hand print on her mother's door, she goes into high gear.
She calls for backup but senses that her mother is in danger. She notices movement in the house so she doesn't wait. She enters the home and sees a dead man in the laundry room. Then she goes upstairs and confronts two other men, there is a confrontation, Faith kills one of the men and chases the other through the back yards of the neighborhood. When this man fires at Faith, she returns fire, killing him. Three invaders are dead but no sign of Evelyn.
Will Trent is Faith's partner, Amanda Wagner of the GBI is his boss and Evelyn's best friend. They lead the investigation. We learn that Evelyn was the commander of the narcotics squad that was stealing money from the people they arrested. Although Evelyn was not part of the investigation, she took an early retirement.
Amanda and Will give first priority to finding Evelyn. What concerns them is that two of the dead men are from the Spanish gang, Los Texicanos, and one was Asian. Members of these two nationalities don't usually work together and Amanda and Will worry that it could be a turf war.
the story deals with the loyalty Amanda and Will have for Evelyn. We also see Faith begin her own investigation and see her love for her mother and belief that she is innocent of any wrongdoings.
The story moves along swiftly and with an inventive plot, knock out characters and a fascinating conclusion, this is an engrossing read.
