"It's tough to make predictions, especially about the future." Yogi Berra

2 1/2 stars.

Dodge Hanley is a former cop who now does special investigations for his friend, attorney, Derek Mitchell.

Dodge has been divorced from Caroline King for thirty years but still has strong feelings about her. Then he's taken by surprise when he receives a call from Caroline asking for his help. Before he can answer, she tells him that their daughter, Berry, is being stalked and was almost killed.

When Dodge arrives in Texas, Caroline introduces him to Berry as an old friend who is a P.I. Then, they inform him of the incident that prompted them to ask him to help.

Orin Starks, a former co-worker with Berry, entered her home and confronted her while she was in the shower. He informed her that he was going to kill her. Before he could act, Berry's scream brought her friend Ben Lofland, who was in another part of the house, to her assistance. Starks was taken by surprise, shot and wounded Ben and then ran away.

Dodge is a no nonesense, chain smoking tough guy in the Clint Eastwood-Dirty Harry image. He begins working with a local deputy sheriff, Ski Nyland, an Afghanistan War vet.

As the men search, Starks goes off on a killing rampage. He kills a number of people and then police find the body of another co-worker, who also had problems with him.

I wanted to like this novel but found the characters stereotypical. Other than Ski Nyland, I found no interesting or sympathetic characters. Berry, rather than a defenseless woman, came out as a scheming, liar who was out for her own professional advancement.

By the time the novel finished, I found that I couldn't care less what happened to the characters and felt that the material in the novel had all been done before.

Sandra Brown is a legend in mystery writing but this novel disappointed.

You absolutely HAVE to find people whose opinions you trust because there are way too many books in this world to even contemplate reading anything but the tiniest sample of them. You're on my trusted list so this one's off my reading lists. Good job, Michael.
